Studio Oil Painting Course
Students can choose to work with a variety of reference materials, work on existing paintings or from a still life set-up that will be available each week. Projects range from a single 4”x4” still life painting, finished by the end of class, to large paintings that require many sessions. Students will have access to notes and demonstrations describing the steps in the process for my own projects. Any subject matter is welcome, open to all media, instruction in oil. This class is limited to five students. Materials suggestions here.
Classes meet April 26, May 3, 10 and 17 in Providence RI. Reserve your spot and attend as many classes as your schedule allows.
Note about oil painting and toxicity: We do not use strong thinners or additives such as turpentine or liquin. Instead we thin our paint with linseed oil especially when working on paintings over 11”x14”. We clean our brushes with murphy’s oil soap and bar soap. When working outdoors we may use odorless mineral spirits mixed 1:1 with linseed, keeping a lid on the jar when not in use.
“I really feel like I see things differently now and understand color so much more. You are a great teacher. Your enthusiasm is visceral and contagious. All in all, a great experience.”
" I had an epiphany and now I am painting almost every day. You've inspired me in a way that's hard to describe. More than your work, which I love, your energy, appriciation for life and all of its opportunities, your passion for people, place and color. Marvelous! So thank you, again."
“Margaret's enthusiasm is so contagious and her guidance is right on the mark!”

"Sketching on the spot forces you to adapt quickly to new environments and pushes one to make the most of the class time. I would wholeheartedly recommend Margaret's class to anyone who wants to deepen their artistic practice. "
"I feel freer."
"...a wonderful combination of expertise (help) and positive criticism"
“Working in a group with many levels of experience has been most satisfying. Very supportive and helpful fellow artists."
